Root Canal Therapy
ENDODONTIC TREATMENT IN WEST DES MOINES, IA
Root canal treatment addresses the tissues and nerve structures in the middle of your tooth, as opposed to other restorations that repair the outer, harder layers. This measure eliminates the source of severe toothaches and abscesses, preventing future tooth loss or the need for emergency extractions.
WHY WOULD YOU NEED A ROOT CANAL?
Here are a few of the most common reasons why we recommend root canals:
Infection
When bacteria penetrate the pulp of a tooth, it can lead to a painful infection known as an abscess. This often happens as a result of deep decay, cracked roots, or traumatic injuries.
Nerve Damage
In cases where the nerve tissue within a tooth becomes inflamed or damaged, a root canal can help alleviate pain and prevent further deterioration.
Dying teeth tend to darken over time. In some cases, physical injuries from years prior may contribute to delayed nerve damage or death of the tooth.
Pain
Persistent and severe toothache when you bite down or eat warm/hot foods is a common indication that a root canal may be necessary. Symptoms can range from mild discomfort to excruciating pain. However, not all infected or dying teeth will hurt, so pain may not always be a good indicator of whether the nerve is compromised.
THE ROOT CANAL PROCEDURE
Contrary to popular belief, a root canal can be just as comfortable as other routine treatments like fillings or crowns. Our skilled dentists utilize modern techniques and numbing medication to ensure your comfort throughout the procedure.
After your tooth is numbed, we’ll create a small opening at the top of your tooth to reach the infected or damaged pulp inside of it. The infected tissue is then removed, and the interior of the tooth is cleaned and shaped to prepare it for the “root filling” material. In most cases, the cleaned space is filled with a biocompatible material called gutta-percha, which seals the inside of your tooth to prevent recurring infection. After your root canal is complete, we recommend covering the tooth with a crown for added protection.
