We offer three types of teeth whitening in our office – KöR Whitening, ZOOM! Whitening, and basic whitening take-home trays.
The KöR Whitening system is meant for people who need intrinsic cleaning or tetracycline cleaning. This means they need a process that does deep cleaning because they have much darker teeth than usual due to taking medicine when they were young, or drinking a greater volume of coffee. KöR is a longer procedure than the other procedures and includes multiple visits. It is the most intense of the procedures we offer and the results are really good; patients are very happy with their results.
ZOOM! Whitening is an in-office whitening procedure where the patient comes in to the dental office to get the whitening done. They do not want to do it at home either because they do not have the time or know they will not get around to wearing the trays for the prescribed amount of time. They also may have stains on their teeth that are tough to get off with at-home whitening procedures.
ZOOM! Whitening is done in one appointment. First, there is a consultation. Then we have patient back for the procedure, which involves about an hour and a half of chair time. The results are great and the procedure is very popular. You can see the results immediately and go home with the whitened teeth that you wanted. Some people prefer to come into the office because they can get someone else to do the procedure for them. Much like you would go to a salon to get your hair colored, some people prefer to go into the dentist’s office to get their teeth whitened.
Basic whitening comes in the form of take-home whitening trays. This involves taking impressions of the patient’s teeth and creating plastic trays for them to wear. A special whitening gel is then placed into the plastic tray, and the patient wears them for one to four hours over their teeth. This procedure is done by the patient at home, and the trays have to be worn for the specified time every day for several weeks. Most people see results right away, but they would need to use the trays for a few weeks to get to the whiteness they desire.
The best candidates for teeth whitening are those that have realistic expectations and are unhappy with the color or whiteness of their teeth. They should not have any restorations on their natural teeth, such as crowns, veneers, or bridges. This is because teeth whitening solutions and bleaches will not affect restorations, causing them to stand out and look different than the rest of your teeth after whitening has been completed. Additionally, any patient that already suffers from extremely sensitive teeth may not want to undergo teeth whitening, as a common short-term side effect of the procedure may be increased sensitivity to hot and cold. Patients with gum disease or periodontal disease should undergo proper treatment to regain their oral health before considering teeth whitening treatments.
Teeth whitening dentistry can be done on patients of any age, whether you’re a teenager or in your “golden years.” Many patients enjoy the many benefits of teeth whitening, and love that it is a fast and affordable way to make their smile look bright and amazing.
